Mifepristone Medication Abortion Services at Planned Parenthood: Open Letter to Planned Parenthood Clients From PPFA Vice President of Medical Affairs Vanessa Cullins, MD, MPH
What's the difference between a medication and surgical abortion? Abortion by medication is a way to end a very early pregnancy without surgery, using a combination of medications. Planned Parenthood Association of Bucks County offers medication abortion using the medications Mifepristone "Mifeprex" and Misoprostol. If the client chooses medication abortion, the physician will give her a medication to take by mouth in the office. This begins the process. 24 to 48 hours after the first medication is taken, the client takes another medication at home. This combination of medications causes a miscarriage to occur. The process is not complete until the client returns for a follow up ultrasound 2-3 weeks later. A surgical abortion is a simple and safe medical procedure called a vacuum aspiration. During the procedure, a sterile instrument is inserted into the uterus, and gentle suction is used to remove the contents of the uterus. The procedure takes less than ten minutes.
